Flat Panel Televisions: How to Recycle That Analog Set
[eba kw="television" num="1" ebcat=""]
If you watch TV and have an older CRT (cathode ray tube) or analog TV, you’ve probably heard that in February 2009, you will need to have purchased a decoder to view basic television programming. Most of us already enjoy digital television programming via satellite or cable, and will not need to do much to prepare for this change. However, if you’re one of the 20 million households that do not take advantage of these services but rather watches TV using an antenna, you will not be able to receive any programming after midnight on February 17, 2009.
CRT TV owners can choose to buy a converter using a government subsidized coupon to buy or they may buy a recent model television that can receive digital switchover, as an LCD or plasma.
The amendment by Congress for the transition to all digital television has been implemented for several reasons:
1. Best picture and sound quality available with digital television
2. More options are free channels available with digital television
3. The transition frees up more frequencies that can then be used by emergency services. What’s The Big Deal?
Because many homes in May actually get rid of their old TV, there is a growing concern about what to do with these TV models older. An estimated 75 percent of unused and broken televisions get stored away rather than recycled or disposed. Keep a former all around is really not a good idea. Older CRT sets contain four to eight pounds of toxic lead, something bad enough to keep lying around your garage. Moreover, throwing these TVs into a landfill is not too aware of the environment or because the lead can leech into soil and groundwater if broken. Recycling can help prevent the spread of this dangerous lead.
In addition, TVs are big, clumsy, non-biodegradable objects that take large amounts of space in the landfills of our nation. Many states have already started banning or limiting the availability of electronic devices in landfills. California, for example, was one of the first states to enact a law prohibiting the throwing of old TV sets, followed by several other states. The Environmental Protection Agency site may give you more information about limitations in your area. How can you recycle your TV?
There are a number of different options available for CRT and owners of analog TV wishing to have their sets in the most socially and environmentally responsible. Before giving your TV to one of these organizations or companies, however, ask some simple questions to verify their compliance with state laws or local disposal and electronics they send any hazardous waste a facility that specializes in safe and legal disposal of such things. It is a gift of Charity: Consider giving your TV to a local charity, church or hospital. They may be willing to remove your hands and pick it up from your house. You can contact the Electronic Industries Alliance for a list of local and national organizations that accept electronics. Local goodwill, thrift stores: Thrift stores will generally take an older television set as long as it is in working condition. If you do not know where to begin, simply make a few calls and see who might be interested. Electronics Retailers: Some retailers, like Best Buy, Circuit City and Office Depot will work with television manufacturers to sponsor in-store collection of televisions, computers and other electronic devices. This service is usually free or there may be a small charge. This is an incredibly convenient option for people who want to have a TV and get a new one in store. Some retailers may even pick up the old TV when they deliver your new one.
