Although there is no single “right” way to learn how to be a writer for television, many are starting to look enormous amounts of episodes of “standard” or “genre” of entertainment they would like write. They break the stories apart structurally to learn what makes a story effective. They analyze the dialogue and voices of characters in order to be able to write “the voice” of the characters on a show.
There are many books that give a good basic background in television writing. The two I recommend are “Writing TV Sitcoms” by Evan Smith and Television Writing Successful “by Lee Goldberg. Looking at the performances and the writing scenes on index cards, an aspiring TV writer will slowly learn basic elements of the structure of the shows they want to write it. Take courses is another way to learn. Whether attending top writing programs in schools like NYU, USC or UCLA or local programs or seminars by industry professionals, the key to success is to continue writing. The more you write the better you become.

While using a typewriter and paper program or word processor like Microsoft Word can be used to write an episode of television nowadays most writers use on screen and television writing software. These programs automatically format your script in a format accepted by the industry as producers and writers are accustomed to seeing. All the books mentioned above provide examples of proper script format and it is strongly advised to buy at least some TV scripts to familiarize yourself with the format and its specificities. Some of the software the most popular scenario includes Final Draft and Movie Magic Screenwriter. Other Plug ‘in’ formatting options are available for use long term and other Microsoft programs, but they do not provide the sophistication, flexibility and compatibility as major programs provide. How to find work as a television writer.
So you put your dues in. So how do you get an agent to have shown your work? There is no simple answer to this question. There are several ways people have got agents and managers who have launched their careers. Some people know a great touch. Others enter and win contests for writers. Others write letters of complaint requesting representation. Still others come with their own creative ways to convince an officer that they are able to make money for them as a writer and be represented. Often, you need to start a small agency and you become more successful move to a larger agency and more established. There is no magic. It’s hard work, perseverance and luck.
